Description

Many people don’t want to take the time to cook delicious Irish oatmeal. But 10 minutes of preparation the night before makes this breakfast, made of steel-cut oats, really fast! Of course, if you don’t have time to plan ahead, old-­fashioned rolled oats cook in about 5 minutes once the water is boiling.

Ingredients

1⁄2 cup
steel-cut oats
2 cups
water

Instructions

1. The night before: Put the oats and water in a small saucepan and put it on the stove. With the help of your adult, turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. (When a liquid boils, you can tell because it starts to bubble.)

2. As soon as it boils, turn off the heat and let it sit until it cools to room temperature, about 20 minutes.

3. Cover and refrigerate at least overnight and up to two nights.

4. In the morning: Remove the cover. Put the saucepan on the stove, and with the help of your adult, turn the heat to high and bring to a boil.

5. As soon as it boils, lower the heat to low, and cook until the water is gone and the oatmeal is tender, about 5 minutes.

6. Add whatever toppings you like and serve right away.

Notes

Add any of the following toppings to each serving:

  • 1/4 cup skim or low-fat milk
  • 2 tablespoons chopped apples, pears or fresh berries
  • 1 tablespoon dried cranberries, raisins, dates, apricots or cherries
  • 1 tablespoon lightly toasted chopped walnuts, pecans or almonds
  • 1 teaspoon flax seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon wheat germ or wheat bran
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, honey, agave, syrup or brown sugar
